Novelist, born in Oak Park, Illinois, USA. She studied at Hanover College, IN, Exeter University in England, and the University of Ottawa, where she later taught literature. She also held positions at the universities of Columbia and Manitoba, and became professor and chancellor of the University of Winnipeg. Her first novel, Small Ceremonies (1976), received the Canadian Authors Association Award for best novel. Later books include The Stone Diaries (1993, Pulitzer) and Larry's Party (1997, Orange Prize). Her final novel, Unless (2001), was short-listed for the Booker and Orange prizes. She was made a Companion of the Order of Canada in 2002.
